From May 1 to 5, a variety of events commemorate the glory of the Hiraizumi Fujiwara.
The climax is May 3's parade of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his retainers (above), recreating the joyful reception of Yoshitsune in Hiraizumi when the young hero fled the pursuit of his vengeful older brother, Yoritomo. Events at Motsuji include memorials for the Hiraizumi Fujiwara and Yoshitsune and his followers, and performances of the Ennen no Mai longevity rites (an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property).
